The Crime Branch CID of the Tamil Nadu police on Friday charge-sheeted senior IPS officer under suspension, G. Sampath Kumar, who had deposed before the Mudgal Committee appointed by the Supreme Court to inquire into allegations of betting and match-fixing in the IPL.

Agency sources said investigation had revealed that the official received bribe for helping a suspected bookie, Mahendra Singh Ranka, involved in the IPL betting scandal. The money was paid to the official’s friends.

The statement of Mr. Ranka and others on payment of bribe was corroborated by bank transactions. Mr. Ranka and three others were also named in the charge sheet, the sources said.

In February 2014, the State government placed Mr. Sampath Kumar under suspension after he deposed before the Mudgal Committee. In his deposition, he had accused the CB-CID of not trying to uncover the masterminds involved in match-fixing and confining its investigation to betting.

He had also suggested that the investigation be transferred to a multi-agency probe led by the National Investigation Agency.

The CB-CID is investigating a separate case in which allegations of match fixing and betting in the IPL were made against a city-based hotelier, industrialist and others.
