For the third day in a row, several areas in and around the city including Adyar, Santhome and Perungudi received rains on Tuesday.

The showers started by 4 p.m. and lasted for over half an hour.

According to Met department data, Padur recorded 13 mm of rain, Kattupakkam 5 mm, Chembarampakkam 4 mm, Taramani 3 mm and Avadi and Kolapakkam 1 mm each.

Till 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday Sriperumbudur, Chembarampakkam and Red Hills received 1 cm of rain each.

According to Y.E.A .Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, the light rains are due to the sea breeze which sets in by 5 p.m. While a strong westerly wind blew from the land, the opposing sea breeze, helped by high surface temperature — the city recorded 38 Degree Celsius on Tuesday — caused convection leading to rain.

While those on the road faced multiple challenges including dangerous potholes and long traffic pile-ups, MRTS commuters had a pleasant ride with a cool breeze prevailing throughout the day.
