Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation have started inspecting rainwater harvesting structures (RWH) at apartment complexes and independent houses that come under Zone 9.
On July 2, officials began inspecting the rainwater harvesting structures at houses in R.K. Nagar under ward 173. They have visited about 120 houses and will inspect 1,000 households in each of the 18 wards in Zone 9.
The ward-level teams comprise junior and assistant engineers from the Corporation and Chennai MetroWater Supply and Sewage Board, depot manager, tax collector and sanitary inspector.

“The team’s objective is to ensure that existing RWH structures are in order and instruct those who do not have the facility to construct one before the monsoon arrives. We will be checking whether the structures are equipped enough to tap rainwater from rooftops, have a proper filter media, percolation pits and recharge wells,” says Veeraraghavan, assistant engineer of Ward 173.
The officials will also guide the residents on how to set up the RWH structures.
“Residents who have not set up the RWH structures have been given time to construct one and those who have failed to maintain them have been asked to clean and renovate them. The team has taken down the details of such houses and we will inspect the houses again after the time limit and check if the RWH systems are in place,” informs the official.
