House burgled: gold, silver and cash stolen

Residents had gone out of town on pilgrimage

Men broke into a house in Mogappair West and stole more than 30 sovereigns of gold, 15 kg of silver and Rs. 10,000.

Sources with the Nolambur police said the house on 5 Block was targeted by burglars when the residents had gone on a pilgrimage.

The couple, Chandran (58), deputy general manager of BSNL, Mylapore, and Valarmathi (54), also an employee of BSNL, had left for Nagapattinam with their son, on Wednesday.

They returned early on Friday and found the front door broken open and the house ransacked.

Thorough inspection of the house revealed that gold, silver and cash placed in two almirahs and near the pooja room were missing.

A gold necklace weighing 10 sovereigns is also suspected to be missing. However, Chandran and his family members are yet to ascertain whether the jewellery was at home or in their bank locker, sources said.

Following information Received, a team from the Nolambur police station carried out preliminary investigations and finger print experts combed the house.

A case had been registered and a thorough investigation is under way, the police said.

Previous burglary unsolved

Last October, an independent house near the residence of city police commissioner S. George was targeted by burglars who fled with 85 sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs. 50,000.

The burglary took place at the residence of Devaraj, a retired additional director of the State finance department, on Nolambur Main Road, when he and his family members were on a tour to Hogenakkal.

Nolambur police teams had investigated the burglary, but there were no breakthroughs, police sources said.
