HC orders police protection to petitioner

The Madras High Court on Monday ordered police protection for a petitioner when he appears before the Deputy Superintendent of Police at Mannargudi to present his case against State Food Minister R. Kamaraj on April 30.

When the case came up for hearing, Justice P.N. Prakash directed the Deputy Superintendent of Police in Mannargudi to give sufficient police protection to the petitioner. While the petitioner would appear at 11 a.m. on April 30, the DSP shall inquire into the complaint and take action in accordance with law, the judge said.

Petitioner S.V.S. Kumar of Needamangalam in Tiruvarur district, in his petition, alleged that he had paid Rs. 30 lakh to Mr. Kamaraj as election expenses through Ramakrishnan, who had promised to get vacate persons occupying a property he purchased in Chennai.

As attempts to meet the Minister and Mr.Ramakrishnan did not succeed, Mr. Kumar approached the police and the Mannargudi DSP allegedly threatened him with dire consequences after obtaining all the documents on April 3, the petition said.

The petitioner was attacked by antisocial elements and he along with his family members were forced to live in their neighbour’s residence.

Counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that his client would be able to appear before the authorities if sufficient protection was granted to him.
