‘Greater safety measures needed at our beaches’

The scenic shoreline draws people from all walks of life, and beaches are among the most crowded spaces. So, it is absolutely necessary that effective steps are taken to ensure safety of visitors to the beaches.

T. Arunachalam, secretary, East Coast Beach Walkers Association, lists out measures that his group want to be be implemented stringently to ensure the safety of visitors.

Arunachalam says, “A good approach road to the beach should be laid for free flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Since, the beach is frequented in the evenings, adequate high-mast lights poles should be installed at strategic locations across the beach. Besides, closed circuit television cameras to keep a tab on the movement of anti-social elements.”

Establishment of police booths at strategic locations will bolster the confidence of visitors to the beach. In addition, police patrolling (in uniform and plainclothes) must be intensified to discourage criminal activity.

During weekends and public holidays, traffic police personnel should be deployed to regulate vehicular traffic and avoid traffic bottlenecks.

Steps should also be taken to relay the damaged and potholes-ridden carriageway to ensure smooth walking surfaces, pointed out.
