Government college teachers plan protest

May 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Government College Teachers’ Manram has planned to stage a demonstration on Thursday in Chennai demanding the dismissal of M. Devadoss, Director of Collegiate Education.

The association members had, a fortnight ago, demanded that the official be removed from his position citing his inefficiency. The members said they had presented their petition to the Higher Education Minister P. Palaniappan and Secretary Apoorva. “The Minister assured us that he would inquire into the issue but nothing has happened so far,” said P. Sivaraman, general secretary of the Manram.

In its complaint the association had said that the director had delayed the payment of salaries of the employees in the Arignar Anna Government Arts College in Cheyyar. “For two months the employees of the Government Arts College in Cheyyar received their salary almost a month late,” he said.

Some teachers have also complained of discrimination on the basis of caste. At least one employee has approached the National Commission for Scheduled Castes seeking redress following such a complaint. The Manram members also demand that the government institute an inquiry into the orders issued to individuals and the transfers approved by him in his capacity as a director.
