One of the wagons of a goods train derailed near Basin Bridge station on Saturday. However, there was no major disruption in the movement of suburban or long-distance trains on the sector.
Southern Railway officials said the goods train with 13 wagons carrying ballast (stones over which railway sleepers are laid) was on shunting duty from track no. 1 to 5. One of the wagons of the train derailed at 11.50 a.m. The wagon was re-railed by 12.30 p.m. and the track was cleared for traffic 30 minutes later. Officials said the wagon that got derailed was of ‘Bobyn’ type – with a capacity to carry 20 tonnes of cargo, mostly ballast.
Officials said the incident took place on the new railway line used mostly for shunting rakes and hence, there was no major disruption in the movement of express and suburban trains.
