Girl dies while reaching out for toy

The glass stand holding a television set in her house broke and pierced her chest

In an accident, a three-and-a-half-year-old girl died after a glass stand holding a television set in her house broke , while she was balancing on it trying to take a toy placed on top.

The accident took place at around 9 p.m. on Friday, when Subashri was playing in the living room of her home in Balaji Nagar 2 Street, Ernavoor.

“Subashri was dancing for a song playing on TV which her dad was watching. Suddenly, she stretched her hands to take her doll placed on a shelf just above the TV set. The stand broke and cut the child and she started to bleed badly,” an elderly woman relative , who had come for the child’s funeral on Saturday , said.

Police sources said Balamurugan and his wife Saraswati rushed their daughter to a private hospital nearby from where she was referred to the Government Stanley Hospital. Doctors there pronounced her dead on arrival.

Theglass pieces had pierced her chest, rupturing a vein and resulting in severe blood loss. A post-mortem was carried out on Saturday morning and the child’s body was handed over to the family, sources said.

Ennore police registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating.
