Free set-top box proposal may take a while

The AIADMK’s election promise of providing free set top boxes to Arasu Cable subscribers in the State may not be easy to fulfil as the Centre’s I&B Ministry is yet to provide the Digital Addressable System licence to the State-run Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation.

A case pertaining to this is pending in the Madras High Court and the I&B Ministry is yet to file its counter affidavit. Industry insiders say the State government should take steps to ensure that the case meets some conclusion. “The government has to urge the court to direct the ministry to file a reply at the earliest,” explained an official said. Only if the Arasu cable corporation obtains a DAS licence can cable operators provide digital signal.
