The Southern railway has augmented its suburban train services to Kancheepuram by extending four EMU services on the Chennai Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpattu section.
Flagging off the newly-extended service at Kancheepuram New Railway Station here on Monday, Divisional Railway Manager, P.K. Misra said that while one EMU service between Chennai Beach and Tambaram each in the morning (train number 40064 between Tambaram and Chennai Beach), afternoon (40093 - Chennai Beach to Tambaram) and night (40152 – Tambaram to Chennai Beach) has been extended, an early morning service from Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu (40509) has also been extended.
The 40509 EMU service, renumbered as 40801, would leave Chennai Beach at 5. 40 a.m. and reach Kancheepuram New Railway Station at 8.20 a.m.

In the return direction, this train numbered 40802, will leave Kancheepuram at 9 a.m. and reach Tambaram by 10. 45 a.m.
In the afternoon, the EMU service 40093, which has been renumbered as 40803, will depart from Chennai Beach at 3. 25 p.m. and arrive at Kancheepuram New Railway Station by 6.15 p.m.
After a halt for about 55 minutes at Kancheepuram, this train, numbered as 40804, will leave at 7.10 p.m. and reach Tambaram by 8.55 p.m. It would reach Chennai Beach by 9. 50 p.m., he added.

With all the 9-unit EMU services in Chennai Beach – Tambaram – Chengalpattu section expected to be converted into 12-unit services soon, Mr. Misra said the carrying capacity of the suburban services would be enhanced by another 25 percent. Now, around 10 lakh commuters daily utilise the suburban services operated in Chennai Beach – Tambaram – Chengalpattu, Chennai Beach – Gummidipoondi and Chennai Beach / Chennai Central – Avadi / Tiruvallur / Tiruttani sections.
Participating in the inaugural function, the Kancheepuram MP, P.Viswanathan called upon the Southern Railway to explore the possibilities of introducing shuttle services between Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu for the benefit of local commuters and as well as tourists.
