On Tuesday evening, a couple, fighting back tears, decided to donate the organs of their six-year-old son, who died in a road accident last Sunday.
A family outing had turned tragic, when Madhan (30), took his wife and two children to a relative’s home in Egmore. Madhan a lab technician and a resident of Dhanalakshmi Nagar, Karambakkam in Porur, was with his wife Gomathi (25) and their two sons Anish Kumar (6) and Vikesh Kumar (4) on a motorcycle.
The accident took place when they were returning home around 10 p.m. Madhan, who was riding the motorcycle, braked suddenly to avoid running over a dog on Harrington Road. The vehicle skid and all four fell on to the road. Anish Kumar sustained severe injuries and fell unconscious.

The family rushed him to a private hospital in the vicinity.
At 3 p.m. on Monday, Anish was declared brain-dead at Mehta’s Hospital, Chetpet. “It was heartrending when the family decided to donate the child’s organs. His mother signed the consent form as the father was also injured in the accident. The boy’s liver and two kidneys were harvested at Mehta’s Hospital. The liver and a kidney were donated to Apollo Hospitals, while another kidney was sent to MIOT hospital,” said J. Amalorpavanathan, convenor of the government’s cadaver transplant programme.
The traffic police registered a case and sent the body for a post-mortem examination to Government Royapettah Hospital. The body was later handed over to the family.
