For the second consecutive year, Erode, with a pass percentage of 98.04 per cent, has emerged a topper in the class X results for the State board announced on Thursday. The district also recorded an improved pass percentage compared to last year.
Virudhunagar district came second, with a pass percentage of 97.98, a one per cent increase compared to last year.
Among the top five districts in terms of pass percentage, Tiruchi and Perambalur showed the biggest improvement, going from 92.45 to 97.62 per cent and 92.33 to 97.25 per cent respectively.

A total of 41 students with Tamil as first language scored 499 on 500 to get the first rank; 190 students scored 499 with Tamil as first language; and 542 students scored 498 marks.
In terms of individual ranks, 773 students got State ranks with Tamil as the first language, according to K. Devarajan, Director of Government Examinations.
Five students in all scored 500 on 500, with French and Sanskrit as first language. As many as 296 students have scored over 498 marks. Twenty-three students who chose Tamil as the medium of instruction received State ranks.

No less studious
For the first time, the government has announced ranks for visually and hearing impaired students. Among the visually impaired students, M. Andal from Little Flower Convent Higher Secondary School for Blind, who scored 477, was declared topper. Mithun V. Krishna from Kasthurba Gandhi Oral School for Hearing Impaired, Varadharajapuram, Coimbatore, scored the highest mark among the hearing impaired students, with 385 marks.
This year, the pass percentage increased by two per cent - from 90.7 per cent to 92.9 per cent. A total of 11,15,906 students took the examinations with 5,33,043 boys and 5,27,823 girls appearing through schools. The pass percentage for girls is 95.4 per cent, while that of boys is 90.5 per cent. A total of 7,96,466 students have scored over 60 per cent, he added.
