The Chennai traffic police began enforcing the seat belt rule in the city from Monday. A total of 331 cases were booked and a fine amount of Rs. 33,000 was collected from motorists.
However, fines were initially imposed only on those who violated the rule on highways such as GST Road, Maduravoyal Bypass, Poonamalee High Road, East Coast Road and the Old Mahabalipuram Road where vehicles ply at great speed.
In the city, motorists, who are driving at slow speeds will be initially only warned. But they will be fined if they are found driving at a high speed without wearing seat-belts. “We will be conducting checks during night too, especially on stretches like Kamarajar Salai and Sardar Patel Road,” said a senior traffic police officer.
