Surveillance is set to improve at north Chennai’s government maternity hospital – Government Raja Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar Lying-in Hospital in Royapuram.
Eight new closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras will monitor the second floor of the hospital. There are also plans to install a camera at the building’s main entrance.
The hospital already has 24 CCTV cameras, and the control room is located inside the office of the superintendent. The additional cameras will help enhance surveillance of the hospital and will allow officials to keep track of the movement of people, hospital authorities said.

“At present, the first floor of the hospital building, which has the post-natal wards, where the mothers and their newborns are accommodated, is covered by cameras. We wanted to extend the surveillance network and so, are installing eight more cameras. These cameras will cover the second floor consisting of the chief minister’s comprehensive health insurance ward no. 500, gynaecology ward, post-operative ward, operation theatre and neonatal intensive care unit,” said V. Kalaivani, superintendent of the hospital.
Wiring work to install the cameras has been completed and the cameras will be installed soon, she said.
The hospital is also planning to replace its old gate at the entrance with a new one. “We have placed an order for a new gate. Once this is erected, we want to install a camera on the gate to monitor the entry and exit of persons,” she added.
