Law states that canvassing on basis of caste is illegal, says SPCSS chief Gajendra Babu

It is rare to find an organisation actively working to improve education lending support to a politician, especially during elections. In a surprising move, this is what State Platform for Common School System (SPCSS –T.N.) general secretary P.B. Prince Gajendra Babu has done.

In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, he has complained about caste names being used during election campaigns. The atmosphere, according to him, is not conducive to a free and fair election.

MDMK leader Vaiko, he says, decided not to contest the polls after being heckled about using caste references. Mr. Vaiko, who is the coordinator of the People’s Welfare Front, has condemned recent ‘honour’ killings unlike the leading Dravidian parties, the educationist has written.

“The Constitution of India declared that untouchability is abolished. The Representatives of Peoples Act clearly states that canvassing in election on the basis of caste is illegal. We therefore request the Election Commission of India to take earnest efforts and do the needful to bring the candidates and parties/groups promoting caste feeling before the law and prevent caste based appeals in any form.”

Mr. Gajendra Babu’s organisation carried forward “the campaign for establishment of Common School system and a society of equals as envisioned by the Constitution.”
