DMK gears up for 2016 Assembly polls

The DMK is gearing up for the 2016 Assembly polls and party treasurer M.K. Stalin has started reviewing the performance of the district units.

“I will address a mega public meeting in Madurai on May 23 to highlight the failure of the ruling AIADMK government on all fronts,” Mr Stalin told The Hindu .

Meeting with district units

He has already completed his meeting with the office-bearers of 13 districts and the exercise will continue to cover all the 65 district units.

Normally, the meetings to prepare the district units for elections would be presided over by party president M. Karunanidhi and general secretary K. Anbazhagan. Now, Mr. Stalin will take up the task as the two veterans are not in a position to travel owing to age.

Senior leaders said the district units were upbeat as the creation of 65 districts had provided space for new faces in the party at the district level.

“There are a lot of new office-bearers and they want to prove themselves. The excitement has come in handy for Mr. Stalin,” said a newly elected district secretary.

Litigations in court

Though elections were held at local level units, there were also election-related litigations pending in courts. During his meeting with the district-level party leaders, Mr Stalin persuaded the unhappy partymen to withdraw their petition through a compromise formula.

“The feedback we received from the district office-bearers is encouraging and they are confident that the DMK-led front will win the next Assembly elections. That the local DMK partymen actively involve themselves in the camps organised by the Election Commission show their enthusiasm,” a senior leader said.
