The power lines at Elephant Gate bridge, located in Periamet, would soon be shifted paving the way for the demolition of the bridge.

The shifting of the power network had been a contentious matter between the railway department and Tangedco over sharing of the cost and allotment of space. The issue has now been resolved after the Railways handed over a portion of the land for erecting the power line.

The Railways wanted the old bridge located between Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. MGR Central Railway station and Basin Bridge station to be demolished for expansion of the tracks. For the electricity department the shifting of the power network involved huge cost. .

A senior official of Tangedco said a letter from the office of the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) allotting space for constructing a 230 kilo volt (KV) tower on railway land and shifting the cable has been approved. The contractor for shifting the power cable along with construction of 230-KV tower has been identified and work would start by this month. The work of shifting the line would be completed within three months after which the railway department could go for demolition of the road over bridge (ROB), he added.
