Course on shoulder injuries to begin today

Over 400 participants are likely to attend event with focus on teaching, training

MIOT International Hospital, under the aegis of the Indo German Orthopaedic Foundation, is hosting a two-day advanced shoulder course on Friday and Saturday.

Speaking at a press meet at the hospital on Thursday, Ram Chidambaram, director, MIOT Centre for Sports Medicine, Shoulder & Upper Limb Surgery, said the main focus of the conference will be teaching and training. The course will include four live surgeries, including two keyhole procedures and two shoulder replacements.

Dr. Chidambaram explained that the shoulder was prone to certain types of problems, including dislocations, rotator cuff tears, fractures and problems due to arthritis or tumours.

Many patients came in with repeated instances of dislocation for instance, he said, or with neglected trauma injuries.

Treatment options

He said that a range of options was available to treat shoulder problems, including shoulder arthroscopy and arthroplasty, as well as treatment for trauma and tumours.

Results in most cases were good, with patients able to obtain the full use of their shoulders eventually, he said. Doctors, postgraduate trainees and physiotherapists are expected to attend the course, which will have four international faculty, 25 national faculty and is expected to draw about 400 participants.
