Despite the opening of the flyover at Porur junction a few months ago, traffic on Porur–Kundrathur Main Road continues to move at a snail’s pace.
It is because the stretch between Porur junction and the Tangedco substation on Porur–Kundrathur Main Road, a distance of around 500 metres, is narrow. On this stretch, driving is a struggle for motorists.
Next, a six-kilometre stretch between Porur and Kundrathur is ridden with potholes.

The bitumen surface has eroded exposing the sandy layer.
At night, motorists rely on the headlights of their vehicles while driving on this stretch as most of the sodium vapour lamps along the road are not functioning.
Similarly, the stretch between Gerugambakkam and Kundrathur lacks safety features such as a concrete median, reflectors, speed-breakers with zebra marking, signboards and street lamps.

“Pedestrians walk on the road as the footpath is encroached upon by shops,” says K. Sivakumar, a resident of Porur.
The only saving grace is that the space at the junction has become wider after the opening of the flyover a few months ago.
Earlier, the flyover work was eating into the road space at the junction.
“Steps will be taken to widen a portion of the road near the Porur junction soon,” says a State Highways official.
