Apollo Hospitals is organising a three-day conclave on various types of cancers and their treatment from February 7 to 9 in the city. The theme of the meeting is ‘Cancer is curable’.
The conclave will have 36 scientific sessions and 100 panellists. It will include workshops, where surgeries will be live-streamed to medical colleges, said T. Raja, senior consultant, medical oncologist at the hospital.
Apollo Hospitals began a dedicated centre for cancer treatment in the city in 1993. Though the centre treats cancer, fear of the disease forced the hospital promoters to change its name to Apollo Speciality Hospital, said Preetha Reddy, managing director.

The hospital has nine dedicated centres to treat cancers and 600 beds for cancer care. Symposia such as these should help dealing with such non-communicable diseases, which are wreaking havoc on the economics of the nation, she said.
Director of medical oncology, Ramesh B.V. Nimmagadda, who has been associated with cancer treatment since the inception of the speciality hospital in 1993, said special segments had been planned during the conference to cover the Afro-Asian population and women.
“One of the major fears in cancer is pain and suffering. When fear goes, more patients will start getting diagnosed. With better medicines and treatment modalities, cancer is not something to be feared now,” Dr. Nimmagadda said.
