Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Monday commissioned the new medical college at Omandurar Estate and additional infrastructure for government medical colleges in the city.
The Government Medical College in Omandurar Estate, built at a cost of Rs. 200 crore, has been sanctioned 410 posts and Rs. 12.24 crore has been allocated for the purchase of equipment. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation is in the process of procuring the equipment, a release added.
An official at the college said the students admitted to the institution were undergoing orientation programme currently.

At the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, which the Madras Medical College is attached to, a microbiology research facility has been set up at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh. At the Kilpauk Medical College, several new blocks including for a paediatric intensive care unit, urology and rheumatology and neurology have been commissioned.
An additional building has been provided for the Government Dental College in the city. The government has spent Rs. 6.37 crore for the purpose.
A new residential building for nursing students, built at a cost of Rs. 2.70 crore was commissioned at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Egmore.

Ms. Jayalalithaa also laid the foundation stone for buildings to be erected at a cost of Rs. 75 crore for various departments.
At the GH, the foundation stone was laid for new buildings for the outpatient ward, rheumatology, urology and operation theatres for which Rs. 58.65 crore has been allocated.
A new hostel building for students of Madras Medical College will be built at a cost of Rs. 6 crore.
The Government Royapettah Hospital has received Rs. 9.58 crore worth medical equipment such as CT Stimulator, digital x-ray, enhanced external counter pulsation and brachytherapy unit.
