K.N. Ramachandran, Member of Parliament, Sriperumbudur Constituency, had a meeting with the residents of Chitlapakkam and other panchayats coming under the jurisdiction of St. Thomas Mount Panchayat Union.

While appreciating the MTC’s move to reintroduce small buses S8 and S3 in the neighbourhood, residents of Chitlapakkam requested that the frequency of these services be increased.

Other issues raised at the grievance meeting include segregation of garbage at a source segregation centre in Keerapakkam, restoration of Chitlapakkam and Sembakkam lakes, construction of an underground channel to carry excess rainwater from Selaiyur lake to Sembakkam lake, construction of a foot-over-bridge connecting East Tambaram and Tambaram Sanatorium and extension of Metro Rail up to Tambaram.

K. Ramakrishna, executive committee member, Sri Sarvamangala Nagar Residents Association (SSNRA), said, “Steps must be taken to include Chitlapakkam in the Chembarambakkam Drinking Water Scheme. At present, residents receive Palar water once in a week. Moreover, the Chitlapakkam Selection Grade Town Panchayat has provided only 1,000 house connections in the last 13 years. However, there are more than 10,000 houses in the neighhourhood.”

P. Vishwanathan, convener, Chitlapakkam Residents’ Association Coordination Committee, said, “The State government is currently carrying out a bio-mining work in Sembakkam lake, which once completed would put an end to the problems of the residents. Bio-mining has been planned for Chitlapakkam lake. It has to start soon.”
