The Chennai Corporation is set to implement a range of projects that will free up space for pedestrians.
At a meeting of the CUMTA sub-committee on non-motorised transport on Monday, officials explored various options to improve non-motorised transport in the short term.
The civic body will start the second phase of constructing footpaths on 66 bus routes. “We will start removing encroachments on footpaths of roads maintained by the Highways Department this month. Work on a key bus route in Velachery will begin shortly,” said an official.

Instead of spending huge sums on new footpaths, the civic body will renovate existing footpaths.
Work on improvement of 343 roads around eight elevated stations on the Metro Rail corridor will be carried out soon.
“We have identified 96 bus bays for pedestrian facility improvement. This will offer commuters space to walk. North Chennai will have 20 such spots, central Chennai 56 and south Chennai 18,” said an official.

The heritage walkway near Mylapore tank is set to be improved at Rs. 5.65 crore.
Work on improvements at TTK Road junction and Pantheon Road junction too will be carried out.
