A large number of city students have come forward to offer technical support to the Election Commission of India in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Chennai district election office had invited applications from colleges and schools to mobilise students to offer technical support in webcasting of the elections.
“The response from the student community has been good. A number of students from various colleges in the city visited Ripon Buildings to register themselves for webcasting of elections,” said an official of the Chennai Corporation.

The students will webcast the polling process at 3,254 booths in the three Parliamentary constituencies covering 16 Assembly segments in Chennai.
Selected students will undergo training in webcasting before the elections. However, students using government-sponsored laptops will not be permitted to participate in webcasting.
Students have also been asked to visit http://election. chennaicorporation.gov.in and register their names for webcasting.

On Sunday, the district election office received applications for inclusion of names from 85,884 electors. Women applicants outnumbered the men in most Assembly segments.
Perambur Assembly segment, with 7,932 applications, has the highest number of applications for inclusion in the rolls. Royapuram Assembly segment has the least, with 2,764 applicants.
