Chennai residents stage protest

December 10, 2013 04:13 am | Updated 04:13 am IST - CHENNAI:

Residents of Maduma Nagar in Sembium on Monday staged a protest demanding that authorities shift back their family cards to the fair price shop in their locality. Blocking traffic on Madhavaram High Road, they said that from last month, their cards had been moved to a new shop since the building housing their original shop required repairs. “The new shop is two bus stops away and to reach the bus stop, we have to walk quite a bit. Autorickshaws charge up to Rs. 40 per trip. In a month we have to make several trips to the shop to get rice, sugar and kerosene. It has become very difficult for us,” said a resident.

Sources at Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation said the building had been repaired and the cards would be moved back to the old shop shortly.
