August 20, 2014 09:21 am | Updated 09:21 am IST - CHENNAI:

In the age of instant messaging, where writing a letter is merely an academic exercise for most children, the postal department is not just encouraging them to write letters, but is going a step further.

They will now be allowed to see heaps of letters being sorted out and sent to different places.

Starting Monday, post offices in the city have turned into tour spots offering to show students how they function.

The postal department has written to the school education department on the initiative to build interest among youngsters about the postal services.

Postal officials will visit schools to introduce children to the world of letter writing and encourage saving habit among them.

Officials of the postal department said children would be taken around various sections and introduced to how a post office works.

The department also plans to organise interactive sessions with philatelists and throw light on savings schemes.

Children will also get to book ‘My Stamp’ that will feature photograph of an individual or logo of an institution.

Children can choose from more themes like vintage trains. “We will also encourage them to take part in a stamp design competition with ‘Clean India’ as the theme,” said an official.

Officials said nearly 10,000 sheets of stamps, worth Rs. 30 lakh, have been despatched in the past year.
