Chennai District Election Office has identified major discrepancies in election expenditure in the register for day-to-day accounts maintained by candidates in three Lok Sabha constituencies.
Over 30 candidates are reporting election expenditure to the Chennai district election office. Records in the shadow observation registers have variations from the accounts submitted by candidates.
Returning officers will send notice with evidence to many of the candidates who will reply to the officials concerned, explaining reasons for omission of the data in the report submitted.

Even as DMK candidate Dayanidhi Maran of Chennai Central submitted records to the tune of Rs. 44,630 until April 11, shadow observation register has recorded an expenditure of Rs.61,64,200. Photocopies of the shadow observation registers have been received by the authorised agents of the candidate.
“The official calculation seems to be based on inflated values of the actual expenditure. We will send a response to the officials concerned,” said one of the authorised agents of the candidate.
The election officials have also disagreed with the data submitted by S.R.Vijaya Kumar of the AIADMK. Mr. Vijaya Kumar had submitted data pertaining to spending of Rs.1.59 lakh until April 12. The shadow observation register has a record of spending of Rs.34.87 lakh during the same period.

If the candidates disagree with the data on the shadow observation register, they will give reasons for disagreement to the election officials.
The data will be forwarded to the district expenditure monitoring committee, which will decide the case after examining the evidence.
