MRC land to be used for road widening

June 26, 2014 09:35 am | Updated 09:35 am IST - CHENNAI:

With Madras Race Club (MRC) agreeing to a proposal to widen the road adjoining it in Guindy, it will lose a portion of its entrance and parking lot.

The Chennai Corporation council is all set to pass a resolution on Thursday on utilisation of 2,220 sq. m. of a six-metre strip of land opposite Guindy railway station for widening of the bus route.

The civic body will reconstruct the gate, parking lot, and the compound wall after widening a short stretch of the road by six metres.

“Widening of the stretch will ease traffic congestion on the bus route. A large number of commuters use the stretch to connect with other modes of public transport,” said an official. Following the widening of the stretch, Corporation officials will also take initiatives to widen more roads in the city. The civic body is likely to get the support of a number of institutions for improving its roads.

More than 40 main roads in various parts of the city will be widened by the civic body using the Transfer of Development Rights provision. A number of institutions on other stretches such as Santhome High Road and Sardar Patel Road are also likely to offer their support to the initiative.

Last month, the Corporation council passed a resolution for widening of roads by acquiring private property. Preparations of land plan schedule for acquisition along a few roads are expected to commence shortly.
