Designated officers to oversee conservancy

Starting Tuesday, designated officers will visit neighbourhoods of all 200 wards to monitor conservancy operations in the morning.

The Chennai Corporation has appointed 200 officers in posts such as zonal officer, executive engineer, assistant revenue officer and assistant health officer to monitor all the wards in the city limits.

The designated officer of a ward will visit the neighbourhoods from 7.30 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. on a daily basis to spot deficiencies in conservancy operations. The Corporation will hold the official concerned responsible if residents report civic grievances. Residents can report issues in conservancy operations by calling the helpline ‘1913’.

Action on the same day

The designated officer will report the deficiencies in a prescribed format to a nodal officer. The officers will then screen the problems, which may pertain to overflowing bins, sweeping of roads, collection of garbage by compactors, or pollution of residential areas. The Corporation will rectify the defects in conservancy on the same day, officials said.

“We have not changed the existing system of conservancy operations. The new team of officials will improve operations by checking whether bins are clean and labourers work properly,” said an official.
