Nuclear medicine dept. gets the nod

July 22, 2014 08:19 am | Updated 08:19 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) has given the nod for the State’s first department of nuclear medicine in the government sector at the Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital at Omandurar Government Estate.

Only a few prominent government hospitals in the country have the facility. Officials said though a number of private hospitals have nuclear medicine departments, this one will be a full-fledged department with all imaging facilities and treatment modalities under one roof.

While the department will be on the ground floor, the treatment wards will be on the third floor. Usually, AERB permits only two beds for such departments but in this case, it has approved four beds.

“A detailed proposal was submitted to AERB. The approval was obtained within a month. We had sketched out the plan along with Public Works Department officials as it required civil modifications,” an official said. “It will help diagnose cardiac ailments, renal diseases and cancers at a very early stage,” he said. This will help avoid painful interventions and surgeries, he added.
