“Strive to move up the ladder of competitive index”

Students having a glimpse of exhibits at the SMKF Techno Expo 2013 organised at Thaiyur, near Kelambakkam.

SMK Fomra Institute of Technology (SMKFIT) organised a ‘Techno Expo and Quiz 2013,’ a four-day event, at its campus in Thaiyur near Kelambakkam. In his inaugural address, L.S. Ganesh, Dean of Students, IIT Madras, said “India occupies 138 place in the Global Competitive Index. Unless we motivate our students to make themselves competent we cannot move up the ladder of Global Competitive Index. An event like this will provide a platform for students to bring out their talent,” he said.

In his felicitation address, K. Bhoopathy Began, Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, MIT, Chennai, advised the students to perform well academics as it is the key to become successful in career.

The annual event had on display over 350 projects from various engineering fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics, electronics and communication, computer science, information technology and bio-medical.

Projects from other subjects like English, mathematics, physics, and chemistry were also exhibited. More than 3,000 students from schools and polytechnic institutions from in and around Chennai visited the event.

Some of the interesting projects were ‘Underground Robot’ which is capable of retrieving people trapped in debris when an earthquake or fire accident occurs from the depth of over 10 metres; ‘Protopein’ that could be a solution to save the lives of soldiers. It is a mechanism where hundreds of robots can perform strategic movements and operations according to the instructions from the human commander; and ‘Automated Guided Vehicle’ that can go detour on encountering the obstacles.

A quiz was conducted in which teams from around 50 schools took part. Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Virugambakkam, won the rolling trophy and Kola Saraswathi Vaishnav Senior Secondary School, Kilpauk, and Modern Senior Secondary School, Nanganallur, secured the runner up prizes.

At the valediction, J. Antony Raj, General Manager of Walleby Metering Systems, and S. Aadhiappan, Headmaster, Fomra School, presented the prizes. The correspondent of the SMKFIT, Sreekumar, presided over the programme.
