Robotic surgery to treat cancer

February 23, 2013 03:14 pm | Updated 03:14 pm IST - Chennai:

In commemoration of World Cancer Day February 4, Apollo Hospitals has organised a programme on Onco Robotic Surgery for cancers. The programme will end on February 8. The advanced method is more precise and heals faster.

Workshops will be conducted on urologic, gynaecologic, colo-rectal and head and neck surgeries during this period. Speaking on the this initiative, V Satyanarayana Reddy , CEO, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Known for the best and latest innovation in medicine, we at Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals have undertaken this OncoRobotic initiative with the purpose of establishing robotic surgery as the unsurpassed and most definite method of treating cancer. We are confident that The Apollo Institute of Robotic Surgery has the potential to provide patients with clinical outcomes of global standards equal to or better than conventional surgery.”

Robotic surgical devices provide high definition vision with up to 10 times magnification in 3D, and an immersive view of the surgical field through a tiny incision of 2 cm. Enhanced dexterity and greater accuracy make complex surgical manoeuvres easier through smaller ports, while minimising patient trauma in confined spaces of the chest, abdomen or pelvis.

This is the only system that allows surgeons to operate while seated, which may also be clinically advantageous. Better ergonomics than traditional open and laparoscopic surgery and a design for natural hand-eye positioning, limiting the assistance required and reducing surgeon fatigue, improves surgical capabilities.

With a focus on product training, clinical training and clinical education for integrated teams, both surgeons as well as operation theatre staff will be equipped to meet surgical demand, while achieving clinical proficiency in the safest, most efficient manner possible.

Apollo Hospitals, in collaboration with the Vattikuti Foundation of Michigan, USA, has established the Apollo Institute of Robotic Surgery which offers Robot Assisted Surgeries of world-class standards at highly affordable prices. State-of-the-art operating theatres in Apollo are equipped with the Da Vinci Si surgical system, the most advanced platform for minimally invasive surgery available today.
