Man hangs self after assault by policeman

Allegedly dejected over being assaulted by a sub inspector at the MKB Nagar police station, a 29-year-old man hung himself at his home in Erukkancheri on Saturday. His family members later protested against the police and damaged a patrol jeep.

MKB Nagar police sources said Vikki alias Vikram Gopal, a two-wheeler mechanic and resident of Annai Indira Gandhi Nagar 1 Street, was on a motorcycle along with two of his friends on Friday night. The vehicle was intercepted by a police team.

After an argument between the police and the men, who were allegedly drunk, they were taken to MKB Nagar police station. There, the two youths were let off while Vikram was allegedly assaulted by sub inspector Vimalanathan. A case was registered against him under Section 75 (Penalty for drunkenness or riotous or indecent behaviour) of the Madras City Police Act. Vikram later hung himself by hanging himself in his room and his death came to light only on Saturday morning.

Around 9.30 a.m., enraged family members and friends of the deceased staged a road roko on Erukkancheri High Road against police and demanded action against the SI concerned. A police patrol jeep was damaged by agitators amidst the commotion. Senior police officers reached the spot and pacified the protestors by promising necessary action, following which the group dispersed.
