From international shores we recently had The Life of Pi . From our own shores, Mani Ratnam’s Kadal is expected to make waves, soon. Now there’s news of another sea-based adventure film, Thanneer Desam, being made. Based on lyricist Vairamuthu’s novel of the same name, Thanneer Desam will be directed by Shivan S.

Vairamuthu has written the dialogues as well as the lyrics for the five songs which are being scored by C. Sathya of Engeyum Eppodhum fame. The shooting is being planned at Thoothukudi, Chennai and the Andaman Islands.

The director says, “It is a scientific novel which was serialised in a Tamil magazine, in 1996. I have retained most of the content as it is and Vairamuthu has added some portions to make it suitable for the film format. And I have written the screenplay.”

Says Vairamuthu: “I got the inspiration to write the story when I went to the beach and watched the waves come and go, ceaselessly. They seemed to convey a message to me, to all of mankind: ‘It doesn’t matter if you fall down; what matters is getting up and carrying on with life.’ The book and the movie are all about this.” Vairamuthu’s book is currently in its 18th edition in Tamil, and an English translation is ready to go to the publishers.
