‘Change in lifestyle can help diabetics’

November 24, 2013 01:30 am | Updated 01:30 am IST - CHENNAI:

Two things can help persons with diabetes lead a normal life – complying with the doctor’s instructions and changing one’s lifestyle, S. Suresh, secretary, Voluntary Health Services (VHS), said on Saturday.

Speaking at an event organised to mark World Diabetes Day at VHS, Professor Suresh said VHS was doing a commendable service in reaching out to children with diabetes. It provides them with free insulin for life.

Ramesh Vangal, chairman, Katra Group, who appreciated VHS’ work, said a charitable foundation run by him was looking at coordinating with the diabetes department.

Ramesh Chandrasekaran, head of the department, said the onset of diabetes could be prevented with a proper diet, yoga and change in lifestyle. Studies show that 64 per cent of persons with impaired glucose tolerance — the stage before diabetes — went back to leading normal lives after a lifestyle intervention.

Prizes were distributed to children who won in various competitions organised on the occasion of Diabetes Day.
