The body of a seven-year-old boy, who went missing on July 17 from outside his home in Nesapakkam, was found floating in the Cooum River in MGR Nagar on Wednesday morning. Police are investigating to determine whether the boy drowned accidently or was murdered.

Police said the victim Dhanush, who was speech impaired, was last seen on the evening of July 17, playing outside his grandfather’s house on Rajiv Gandhi Street, Khan Nagar. Dhanush had been living there after the death of his mother and abandonment by his father.

When he went missing, Dhanush’s relatives lodged a complaint and pasted posters around the locality. The police had then launched a search for the boy.

Around 8 a.m. on Wednesday, residents near the Cooum River Bridge in Annai Sathya Nagar, MGR Nagar, spotted the body of a child floating on the water. The police were informed and a team fished the body out.

The boy’s body was sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The police however, suspected that the body could be that of Dhanush’s, and called his family, who arrived and identified the body. A case of unnatural death has been registered.
