The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Egmore, granted bail to social activist ‘Traffic’ K.R. Ramaswamy, who was arrested on March 12.

The activist will have to appear before the 14 Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Egmore every week. Though his followers were joyous about the bail, they were worried about his health condition, said his counsel N. Subramanian.

Mr. Ramaswamy was arrested while removing unauthorised hoardings on Alagappa Road, Vepery. A day after his arrest, the Madras High Court came down heavily on the city police for the hasty, early morning arrest of the 82-year old social activist. The court wanted the respondents to justify their action in arresting him at 4 a.m.

Following the arrest, Mr. Ramaswamy was admitted to Government Royapettah Hospital for treatment of a pre-existing condition and later shifted to the Government Super Speciality Hospital on the order of the High Court.
