A newborn girl, abandoned near a bus stop on Grand Southern Trunk Road in St. Thomas Mount, was rescued by an autorickshaw driver on Thursday morning.

Senthil, the driver, was at Asarkhana bus stop when he heard the cries of an infant. He found the baby wrapped in a towel and took her to St. Thomas Mount police station. She was later taken to Government Children’s Hospital, Egmore. Sources said the girl must have been born only on Wednesday as her umbilical cord was intact.

Young mothers abandoning their just borns, especially girl babies, is not uncommon in the city and its suburbs.
