At World City, an all-women post office

Postwomen are ready to cover the large distances between IT companies to deliver letters quickly.

To handle the sheer volume of communication emerging from an Information Technology hub like Mahindra World City is indeed a challenging task. But, employees of the first all-women post office in the Chennai city region plan are gearing up to face the challenge.

The post office in Mahindra World City was upgraded into a delivery post office since Monday with four women employees. Following the demand from the IT hub, it was decided to upgrade the office, which till recently was undertaking only counter operations.

T.S. Janaki, sub-post master of Mahindra World City post office, said: “Earlier, we had to ask customers to take delivery of letters from Paranur, which is about one kilometre from here. The response has already been good with about 1,000 letters coming in for delivery every day. We want to speed up the delivery of letters.”

For postwoman G. Renuka, covering the large distances between the big companies is a challenge. “Unlike other post offices that largely cover residential areas, our post office has more business and IT clients. Sometimes, I have to travel a minimum of half-a-kilometre to get from one office to another. I try and inform customers about delivery to save time. To be part of an all-women post office is more encouraging, says Renuka who travels about 20 kilometres daily on her two-wheeler.

Mervin Alexander, postmaster general, Chennai City Region, said the all-woman post office near Ethiraj college is involved only in counter operations. But, in Mahindra World City post office, two postwomen will be delivering letters.
