Engineering aspirants this year will be able to make informed choices about the college and course they want to take up. Anna University on Thursday has uploaded the academic performance of all its university departments and affiliated colleges, following a recent court order. Aspirants can check details of the colleges at >http://www.annauniv.edu/ . The counselling for this year begins on Friday.
On June 14, the Madras High Court directed the university to publish the statistics regarding pass percentage of institutions affiliated to it for 2011-12 on its website before counselling starts. “We have uploaded more details than what the court has asked us to. An aspirant will be able to check how students of a particular college fared in all eight semesters in all branches,” said Anna University vice-chancellor R. Rajaram.
Some parents said that the details could have been made available earlier as by now, many students have already made their choice. “But it is good that we have official data at least now. Many colleges in their brochures highlight their university gold medallists, and do not mention the overall performance, which is often poor,” said D. Selvakumar, a parent. Nearly 2.5 lakh candidates have applied for engineering admissions to the over 520 engineering colleges in the State. Most of them come under the self-financing category. “Students should be careful about colleges that came up in the last few years. Also, they need to enquire about details such as employment levels, canteen, hostel and the fee structure of the college, besides its academic performance," said R. Ravishankar, an associate professor. “Many colleges have very strict rules and employ rote-base learning methods, and constant testing to ensure their results are good. These do not suit all students. Aspirants should talk to those studying in the college before a decision,” he added.
