In a couple of weeks, Aavin products, including flavoured milk, ghee, milk with 180 days shelf life and skimmed milk powder will be available across the country. This is part of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation strategy to promote its brand — Aavin — in other States too.

“Initially, products will be sold in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Odisha, Delhi and Kolkata. We are in the process of finalising dealers for these places. There is a good demand for milk powder in Andhra Pradesh. Also, many people, especially senior citizens, prefer skimmed milk powder. We will be selling powder in the north east too where there is a milk shortage,” Aavin managing director C. Kamaraj told The Hindu .

From its daily procurement of 25.25 lakh litres, Aavin has around 2.5 lakh litres of excess milk — the city consumes 11.65 lakh litres of milk a day and the districts, 9.9 lakh litres.

Excess milk

“Excess milk is converted into butter and skimmed milk powder. In a month, we use around 350 tonnes of powder and 500 tonnes of milk. The excess is currently being sold to cooperative federations. The rates we are hoping for is above ₹350 a kilo. Recently we sold 1,000 tonnes of powder to Madhya Pradesh,” he said.

“We will not sell our entire stock of powder and butter since we have daily requirements for reconstitution of milk and also for sale in our market,” Mr. Kamaraj said.
