Several employees of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) went on a hunger strike at Chennai airport on Tuesday, continuing to register their protest against the proposal to privatise the airport. AAI employees have been protesting this move by the government for over three months now.

“We will continue our hunger strike till Friday. After that, we will coordinate with the union members in New Delhi and announce our next move. We are also trying to seek the Chief Minister’s help in this issue,” said L. George, regional secretary of the Airports Authority Employees’ Union (AAEU).

The striking employees said they have not received any satisfactory response to their protest from the civil aviation ministry. “We have been protesting continually, but ministry officials have not paid heed to it,” Mr. George said.

Earlier this month, when several bidders came to visit the airport, the protestors refused to allow some of them inside the terminals.
