Do you wish to know the shortest route from Saidapet to Velachery? Log on to http://rtis.iitm.ac.in to plan the route prior to travel or look out for the electronic display boards displaying the approximate travel time through different routes.
This is part of the Real-time Traffic Information System (RTIS) prototype project being conducted by the transportation engineering division of IIT-Madras. Around 115 persons have used this facility till Wednesday noon and some of them have said it is very useful.
The network selected for the project is 16 km long and includes parts of OMR, Taramani Road, Velachery Main Road, Velachery Bypass Road, Sardar Patel Road, and Taluk Office Road.

The RTIS provides information to commuters through two mediums: their website and Variable Message Signs (VMS) or electronic boards near Raj Bhavan, Madhya Kailash, SRP Tools, Vijayanagar and Tidel Park.
Upon logging in, one can get information on alternative routes and travel time by selecting the origin, destination and mode of travel. Maps depicting congestion levels and speed, traffic delay maps at various junctions and roads, live traffic camera and traffic news and alerts are also part of the website.
Traffic flow will be monitored by researchers in the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) lab at IIT-M using GPS devices fixed in 100 MTC buses and live traffic feed from 32 cameras fixed on Sardar Patel Road, IT Corridor, Velachery Road and Taramani Road.

This system is a part of the ‘Advanced Traveller Information System (ATIS) for Indian Cities’ sponsored by the Department of Electronic and Information Technology (DeitY), Government of India. It was jointly developed by Indian Institute of Technology-Madras and C-DAC (Trivandrum). The project was initiated a few years ago by faculty members, R. Sivanandan, Karthik K. Srinivasan, V. Lelitha Devi and Gitakrishnan Ramadurai. The website, http://rtis.iitm.ac.in, is now available to the public and feedback is also invited.
