If you are a graduate of any discipline and looking for a change in profession, arbitration could be a wise choice, said C.B. Paul Chellakumar, president, Academy of Arbitration Avenues International. Speaking at an event to launch an online 6-month PG diploma course on arbitration here on Saturday, he said skills in arbitration along with Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) could be useful to not just lawyers but also to company secretaries, chartered accountants, civil and structural engineers.
Former Madras High Court judge E. Padmanabhan, who launched the course, said arbitration was slowly catching up, with national law schools too offering it as a subject. It is a good mechanism to settle disputes outside courts, thus reducing the burden on the judiciary and speeding up the process for the parties involved, he said. He also announced that the online course was accredited by International Association of Accounting Professionals (IAAP), U.K.
Course director V. Inbavijayan said though the Arbitration Act was enacted in 1996, it is only now that it has caught the fancy of many. The first batch will commence on July 1. The candidates are assessed on the basis of assignments submitted by them.
