The temple was built during the reign of Chola king, Parantaka – I (907 A.D – 955 A.D). Inscriptions, decoded by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1912 A.D, refer mainly to donations like lands given for temple maintenance by rulers and merchants.
The temple and its tank were also famous for their association with the 10th century saint, Thirukachi Nambigal, teacher of saint Ramanujar.
According to K. Sridharan, former deputy director, Tamil Nadu State Archaeology Department, the temple and the tanks are in Puliyur Kottam of Thondaimandalam.

The Kottam is a political division for administration purpose created during Pallava era and followed by later rulers.
