Undergraduate students of the Stanley Medical College have come up with a unique initiative: a Mediclub that will bring together people from different colleges to kindle an in interest in learning. The club plans to organise an event every two months, from lectures to workshops and more.

H. Praveen, final-year MBBS student and academic secretary of the Mediclub, said, “We wanted to make learning more interesting and interactive. It is a student initiative that we hope will contribute to the skill development of medical students across Tamil Nadu.”

The club’s activities began with a lecture on radiology by the college’s head of the radiology department, C. Amarnath. The club’s organisers said about 300 people attended the two-hour lecture on Friday. Among those who attended were students from Kilpauk Medical College, Madras Medical College, Sri Muthukumaran Medical College and K.A.P Viswanathan Government Medical College in Tiruchy.

“The students are stretching their potential. It is very nice to see that despite being busy with their academics they are finding time to organise such events,” said C. Geetalakshmi, dean of Stanley Medical College.

The forty-member organising committee has planned other events in the coming months where they intend to invite professors and experts from across the country. A workshop on cancer is in the planning stage to be held later this year, as well as lectures on the promotion of research. “We have just started out. If all works out well, then in a couple of years we hope to involve medical students from other states as well,” said Praveen.
