A centum spree again?

March 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - CHENNAI:

With the corrections for Class XII exam papers taking place, teachers say they expect a large number of centums and students who score 99 in different papers in all the streams.

Some years ago, it was difficult for children to get a centum in even one subject, but now, it has become easy to score a centum even in English because of the change in pattern of the question paper, said an English teacher from a school in Mandaveli.

Last year, around 2,710 students across the State scored centums in physics, 3,882 in mathematics, 993 in computer science and even in commerce 1,500 students scored 100 per cent.

According to one government teacher who has been involved in paper correction for the past 10 years, the lack of subjective questions and the removal of the post of ‘super-checker’, who would scrutinise all papers of students scoring more than 190/200, has resulted in a more liberal correction pattern.

“Now, the correction is based only on the answer key provided, and the number of one mark and objective questions have increased drastically. Although the process is monitored at several levels, the assessment does not measure the students’ aptitude,” he said.

In contrast, the CBSE examination measures the students’ skill levels and understanding of the subject, said Shobha Ananthanarayanan from Mookambika Coaching Institute. “Since the state board syllabus only focuses on rote learning, these students are able to score over 195 very easily in the boards, but are unable to compete with CBSE students in college,” she said.
