Work on J.N. Salai flyover to begin next week

1.14 km-long four-lane bidirectional flyover will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 93.50 crore

A second pile test has just been completed for the construction of a 1.14 km-long flyover on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai at Kaliamman Koil Junction that will carry 70 per cent of the road’s traffic. Work to construct the Rs. 93.50-crore four-lane bidirectional flyover is likely to commence next week.

The work had been put on hold due to the Assembly election.

Sources in the Highways Department said that only recently, the traffic police had given permission for cordoning off two lanes of the road along the median.

“A three-day trial run has been completed and initially, 200 m of the stretch will be cordoned off for the construction of the 40-span flyover that will come up in 33 months,” explained a source.

On completion, the flyover will reduce congestion at the entrances of the CMBT bus terminus at Koyambedu and the Kaliamman Koil junction, the source added.

Leela Anbu, a Virugambakkam resident, who welcomed the commencement of work, said the government should ensure time-bound completion.

The flyover at Porur is still incomplete and causing traffic jams, she pointed out. Similarly, she said that the widening of the Kaliamman Koil Street must be taken up as soon as possible.
