Three men died and 20 others were injured when a speeding private bus rammed into a stationary lorry in Madurantakam early on Saturday.

Kancheepuram district police sources said a private omni bus with nearly 50 passengers was on its way to Chennai from Devakottai. A sand-laden lorry, from Villupuram to Chennai, was parked on the margins of the National Highway 45 (Grand Southern Trunk Road) near a roadside restaurant. At 4.45 a.m., the bus driver swerved to the left, reportedly in an attempt to overtake a vehicle, and rammed into the lorry. Gnanasekaran (44), the bus driver and Velayudham (45), a passenger sitting in the front seat, were killed instantly in the impact of the collision. Tirunavukkarasu (55), a bus crew, sustained critical injuries and died later in a hospital.

Police said that 20 others were injured. The condition of six of them was said to be serious. The injured are receiving treatment at the government hospitals in Madurantakam and Chengalpattu.
